Specialty Diving Projects
Hydroelectric Facility
(2010)Inspection of concrete apron construction slab/joints and trash racks.
Underwater maintenance and repair activities at a Hydroelectric Power station to access a 16-inch water intake and install an isolation plug which would allow facility maintenance crews to replace a valve in the water intake system. Once valve was replaced, dive crews removed the 16-inch plug and placed the intake area with a steel screen. Additional tasks included inspecting the gate slot tracks and the bottom seal area.
Power Plant
(2009)Provide supervision, labor, materials and equipment for repairs to the discharge circulating water line by welding cover plates (fabricated at Specialty’s shop), over the holes to prevent further damage.
Bridge Inspection & Repair
Anahuac, MexicoIn 2010 an underwater Level II inspection was performed on Kansas City Southern Railway company’s bridge (El Salado Bridge) located in Anahuac, Mexico by Specialty Diving. Bridge had a washed out deck plate girder that was located by the divers and removed from the water.
This project, however, posed a unique security problem for Specialty Diving. Because of the unpredictability of the drug cartel, SDI required its crew to have a 24-hour security escort. Despite these measures, and shortly after the project was completed, SDI’s crew was threatened by the cartel and subsequently had to be smuggled back to the states after learning all roads leading back from the site to the United States had been blockaded by the cartel. The crew arrived safely back home via train.
Client was extremely grateful that, despite these risks, Specialty Diving was able to complete the inspection, and assist in the necessary repairs to the bridge.
Environmental Services Company
(2008)Specialty Diving was contacted by an environmental service company to conduct the salvage operation of a marina dock including numerous boats and boat lifts, fuel tanks, air conditioning units, pontoons, and other water vehicles from a marina. The salvage was the result of a major fire on the docking facility.
The project involved the clearance of 32 covered docking slips and electrical boxes and the inspection and removal of the burned dock, metal roof and all appurtenances. Additionally, Specialty made sixteen lifts of piping and twenty-one lifts of metal roofing. The assignment was completed in a timely manner and with no safety-related injuries.
